The Message Blocks User Guide is designed to help users confidently navigate and utilize the Email Designer to create customized headers and footers for survey emails.

To Manage Message Block Settings:

  1. From the main navigation, select Gear icon (Settings).

  2. Select Message Blocks in the second level navigation.

  3. Edit information - See details below.

  4. Select Save to update changes.

The following sections outline how to work with message blocks.

Upon clicking the Message Block tab, three tabs will be visible across the top: Brand, Location, and Department.

These tabs allow creation of headers and footers for use in surveys under Configure Surveys.

  • Brand Tab (Default): Selecting the Brand tab allows creation of headers and footers at the brand level. When configuring the survey, choosing the Brand option will apply the header and footer built in this tab across the survey.

  • Location Tab: Switching to the Location tab allows creation of headers and footers specific to a location. Selecting the Location option during survey design will apply these headers and footers.

  • Department Tab: The Department tab enables creation of different headers and footers for specific departments.

    Example Scenario:

A unique header and footer can be created for the Food & Beverage department. This allows for greater customization based on organizational structure.

After selecting the tab where the header or footer will be created, a dropdown below allows choosing whether to set up the header or footer.

The selected option can then be created using the Email Editor and will be included in the surveys and messages created using the custom message block.

The Email Designer is organized into three main tabs—Structure, Content, and Settings—which work together to build customized headers and footers for survey emails.

  • Structure Tab: Establishes the layout framework. Structures determine how sections are arranged, how many columns they contain, and how elements are positioned within the header or footer.

  • Content Tab: Provides the elements placed inside the structures, such as text, images, buttons, videos, social icons, spacers, dividers, and HTML. These components form the actual content of the header and footer.

  • Settings Tab: Controls the global styling of the template, including fonts, colors, spacing, and background settings. These defaults ensure consistent design across all sections.

All default settings configured in the Settings tab can be overridden at the structure or content level, allowing precise customization where needed.

Together, these tabs enable full customization by defining how the header and footer are structured, what content they include, and how they appear visually.

Step One: Configure Default Styling in the Settings Tab

In the Settings tab, the defaults define how the template will appear before any individual adjustments are applied.

Begin by defining the global appearance of the template using the Settings tab.
Adjust the following settings as needed:

  • Template colors
  • Default fonts and text styles
  • Default lists (spacing and padding)
These settings create a consistent baseline for the entire header or footer.

Step Two: Add the Layout Using the Structure Tab

Structures act as the skeleton of the design and determine how content will be arranged.

Open the Structure tab to define the layout framework.

  1. Select a structure type based on the desired number of columns (one to four).
  2. Drag the selected structure into the template.
  3. Add multiple structures if needed to organize the header or footer cleanly, especially for mobile-responsive layouts.
  4. To further adjust structure properties—such as width, background color or image, margins, borders, and column settings—select the added structure.
    • The structure settings can then be modified using the controls on the left.
Step Three: Insert Elements Using the Content Tab

Content blocks provide the components used to visually build the header or footer, forming the structure’s essential visual elements.

Open the Content Tab to add in elements into the structure added.
  1. Open the Content tab.
  2. Drag the desired content block into a column—text, images, buttons, social icons, videos, GIFs, dividers, spacers, HTML, or product blocks.
  3. Select any content block to edit it using the left panel or in-template editing tools.
    • For text: format fonts, colors, and links.
    • For images: upload or link an image, adjust alignment, add alt text.
    • For buttons: edit text, colors, links, shape, and alignment.
    • For social icons: choose networks and assign URLs.
    • For video links: insert a URL to generate a preview thumbnail.
  4. To further edit and override the defaults configured in the Settings tab, select the added content block or element and apply the desired changes using the editing options on the left.

Before finalizing, ensure all structure and content adjustments are complete.

Step Four: Select Save

Selecting Save will store the message block.

Use Pre-Made Templates (Optional)

To speed up the process, pre-made footer structures can be used instead of building one from scratch.

  1. Add the structure or layout using the Structure tab.
  2. Select the + icon within the structure that was added.
  3. A pop-up will appear—switch to the second tab, Pre-Made.
  4. Select Footer and choose from the available footer options.
  5. The selected pre-made footer will be inserted into the structure.
  6. Review steps one through four to customize the structure and content so it aligns with required branding or survey requirements.

Pre-made templates provide a fast starting point while still allowing full flexibility for customization.

Summary
  • Settings define global styling.
  • Structure determines the layout.
  • Content adds the elements displayed in the header or footer.
  • Overrides allow element-level customization.
  • Pre-made templates provide a fast starting point.
These steps together enable the creation of a fully customized, brand-aligned header or footer for survey emails.

Once the message block is built and customized, it can be added to the survey during survey creation. For more information, see Configure Surveys > 1 Survey Design.
